Understanding Scaling & Polishing
Even with careful brushing, hard tartar builds up where a toothbrush cannot reach. Professional cleaning removes it, freshens breath and is one of the most effective ways to keep gums healthy.
Tartar is hardened plaque. It cannot be brushed away, and it irritates the gums, causing bleeding, bad breath and eventually gum disease. Regular professional cleaning keeps it under control.
Is it right for you?
- Gums that bleed when you brush
- Bad breath that does not go away
- Hard yellow or brown deposits on teeth
- Stains from tea, coffee or smoking

Scaling & Polishing at Our Clinic
Here is what each option involves, so you can come to your consultation knowing what to ask.
Ultrasonic Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler uses fine vibrations and a cooling water spray to break up tartar above and just below the gum line. We finish with hand instruments to reach between the teeth. You may feel vibration and cold water, but scaling is not usually painful. If your gums are very sensitive, we can numb the area.

Polishing & Stain Removal
After scaling, we polish the teeth to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel, so plaque has less to stick to. Your teeth will feel smooth and clean. Polishing lifts surface stains; deeper discolouration may need whitening.

Healthy Gums
Bleeding gums are the earliest sign of gum disease, and at this stage it can usually be reversed. Regular cleaning, together with better brushing and cleaning between the teeth at home, brings the gums back to health. Patients with deeper gum pockets may need more frequent cleaning or deep cleaning below the gum line.
