Dental Implants

Understanding Dental Implants
Missing a tooth changes how you eat, speak and smile. A dental implant replaces the lost root with a small titanium post, and a custom crown sits on top. Once healed, it looks and works much like a natural tooth and does not rely on the teeth next to it.
Implants suit most healthy adults who have lost teeth to decay, gum disease or injury. Because an implant sits in the jawbone the way a root does, it also helps slow the bone loss that normally follows a missing tooth.
Is it right for you?
- You have one or more missing teeth
- You want to leave the neighbouring teeth untouched
- Your denture is loose or uncomfortable
- You are in good general health

Dental Implants at Our Clinic
Here is what each option involves, so you can come to your consultation knowing what to ask.
Single-Tooth Implants
When one tooth is missing, a single implant fills the gap without trimming the healthy neighbouring teeth, as a conventional bridge would. We first check the bone with X-rays, then place a small titanium post under local anaesthesia. Over the next few months the bone bonds to the implant. Once it is firm, we attach a connector called an abutment and fit a custom crown matched to the shade of your other teeth, so the new tooth blends in when you smile.

Implant Bridges & Dentures
If several teeth are missing in a row, two implants can support a bridge of three or four teeth, so you do not need an implant for every gap. Implants can also anchor a denture with press-stud attachments, which stops it from moving while you eat and speak. Patients who have struggled with a loose lower denture often notice the biggest difference.

Full-Arch Restoration
For patients missing most or all of the teeth in a jaw, a complete arch of fixed teeth can be supported on a small number of implants, often four to six. This replaces a removable denture with teeth that stay in place. Suitability depends on the amount of bone and your general health, so every full-arch case begins with a detailed examination, X-rays and a written treatment plan.

Questions About Dental Implants
Is getting an implant painful?
Placement is done under local anaesthesia. Most patients describe mild soreness for a few days afterwards, usually managed with ordinary painkillers.
Am I too old for implants?
Age alone is rarely a barrier. Your general health and the bone in your jaw matter more, and we check both before recommending treatment.
How long do implants last?
With good cleaning and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years. The crown on top may need replacing after years of wear.
