Understanding Orthodontic Braces
Crowded, gapped or crooked teeth are harder to clean and can affect your bite. Braces move teeth gradually into a better position. We assess your teeth and jaws, then recommend the approach that suits your case and lifestyle.
Braces work at almost any age, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy. Children often start once most adult teeth have come through, and many of our patients are adults fixing a problem they have lived with for years.
Is it right for you?
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- An overbite, underbite or crossbite
- Teeth that are hard to keep clean

Orthodontic Braces at Our Clinic
Here is what each option involves, so you can come to your consultation knowing what to ask.
Metal Braces
Metal braces are the most widely used and cost-effective option. Small brackets are bonded to each tooth and connected by a thin wire. At each visit we adjust the wire to guide the teeth gradually into place. They handle everything from mild crowding to complex bite problems, and modern brackets are smaller and more comfortable than they used to be.

Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces work exactly like metal braces, but the brackets are made from a tooth-coloured material, so they blend in with your teeth and are much less noticeable in photos and at work. They suit adults and older teenagers who want a discreet option, and need a little extra care to avoid staining from tea and curry.

Retainers
When the braces come off, teeth naturally try to drift back. Retainers hold them in their new position while the surrounding bone settles. We may fit a thin wire behind the front teeth, give you a clear removable retainer, or both. Wearing your retainer as advised is the best way to protect the result you have worked for.

Questions About Orthodontic Braces
Do braces hurt?
Teeth usually feel tender for a few days after fitting and after each adjustment. Soft foods and ordinary painkillers help.
What is the best age for braces?
Many children are assessed around 10 to 12 years old, but adults can have braces too. Healthy teeth and gums matter more than age.
How long will I wear braces?
Most treatments take one to two years. We give you an estimate for your case at the assessment.
