Dental Emergency at Our Clinic

Here is what each option involves, so you can come to your consultation knowing what to ask.

Dental Emergency

Toothache & Swelling

Severe toothache or swelling usually means infection inside the tooth or gum. We find the cause with an examination and X-ray, relieve the pain and start treatment, for example by draining an abscess or beginning root canal treatment. Painkillers can help while you wait, but never place a tablet on the gum, because it can burn the tissue.

Broken or Knocked-Out Teeth

If an adult tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it briefly if dirty, try to put it back in its socket, or keep it in milk, and come straight to the clinic. A tooth replanted within an hour has the best chance of surviving. Broken teeth can often be repaired with bonding or a crown.

When to Go to Hospital

Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if swelling is spreading towards your eye or down your neck, if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or if you have had a serious injury to your face or jaw. These situations need urgent medical care.

Questions About Dental Emergency

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or a knocked-out or broken tooth.

Should I go to hospital or the dentist?

Most dental problems are best seen by a dentist. Go to hospital if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you struggle to breathe or swallow.

Can I take antibiotics myself?

No. Antibiotics only help in certain cases and should be prescribed after an examination.
