Understanding Crowns & Bridges
A crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a weak, cracked or heavily filled tooth to restore its size, shape and strength. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a false tooth to the teeth on either side.
Crowns and bridges are fixed, so they stay in place and feel like part of your mouth. Modern materials can be matched closely to the colour of your natural teeth.
Is it right for you?
- A tooth weakened by a large filling
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A back tooth after root canal treatment
- One or two missing teeth with strong neighbours

Crowns & Bridges at Our Clinic
Here is what each option involves, so you can come to your consultation knowing what to ask.
Zirconia & Porcelain Crowns
A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth to restore its shape and strength. Zirconia crowns are very strong and suit back teeth that take heavy chewing forces. Porcelain crowns give the most lifelike appearance at the front. Metal-ceramic crowns combine a metal base with a tooth-coloured surface and remain a reliable option.

Fixed Bridges
A bridge replaces one or two missing teeth by attaching a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. It is cemented in place and does not come out, which many patients prefer to a removable denture. Where the neighbouring teeth are healthy and unfilled, an implant may be the better option, and we discuss both.

Care & Lifespan
Crowns and bridges need the same care as natural teeth. Brush twice a day, and clean under a bridge with floss threaders or small interdental brushes, because food can collect there. With good care and regular check-ups, crowns and bridges can last for many years.

How the Treatment Works

Examination
We check the tooth and take X-rays if needed.
- 2
Preparation
The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia and impressions are taken.
- 3
Temporary
A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made.
- 4
Fitting
The final crown or bridge is checked, adjusted and cemented.

Questions About Crowns & Bridges
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed before preparation, so you should feel little more than pressure.
Crown or implant for a missing tooth?
It depends on your neighbouring teeth, bone and budget. We explain the pros and cons of each.
Can a crowned tooth get decay?
The crown cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can at the edges, so cleaning matters.
